“Love handles” is a phrase used to describe that area around your waist that allows for others to grab, as if it was a handle rather than a roll of extra fat and skin.

It has been shown that excess weight around the middle is a good indicator that a person will suffer from heart risks at an accelerated level. There is a genetic element which determines where fat is stored in your body. For some people, this will be the hips or the buttock. Even the thighs can be the target area for fat deposits. Whilst no one wants to have larger hips or a big backside, the fact is that it is healthier for someone to have fat there then around their middle.

As we mentioned earlier, there are increased risk factors for those that have extra stored fat around their mid section.

When you eat carbohydrates the body converts them into glucose and it enters the bloodstream to be carried to the cells in the body where it will be used as fuel for energy. If blood glucose peaks too high insulin, a hormone is secreted to get the excess out of the blood, and if not needed for energy to put it into fat storage.

Insulin resistance develops when the body becomes insensitive to insulin. Even more insulin is required to reduce the blood glucose highs.

Research suggests that approximately one out of four Americans is resistant to insulin.

If you eat foods that are high in sugar or too many simple carbohydrates, then you are likely to be one of the many that is insulin resistant or on the verge of becoming so. Foods like cakes, soda pop, processed foods, pizza, chips etc, make the problem ten times worse.

Also, those that are inactive also face insulin resistance. As are those who drink too much alcohol, get stressed, have a family history of diabetes, carry too much fat around the middle are all candidates to suffer from insulin resistance.

Almost everyone can reverse their situation by working not only on getting rid of love handles, getting fitter, and improving their overall eating habits and lifestyle.
