Incidences of diabetes are increasing rapidly inspecific populations, and has become a public healthconcern in many communities around the world. Thisconcern includes Punjabi speakers in the South FraserHealth Region – adjacent to Vancouver, Canada. Thereis administrative interest in the healthimplications, especially for vulnerable groups, manyof whom are English language low-literate. This studyfocuses on determinants of health, low Englishlanguage literacy, and the forms of access to healthinformation about managing a chronic condition. Thediscussion includes psychosocial aspects, such as the’Golden Jail,’ whereby the immigrant appears to enjoya much better lifestyle, but at a personal and socialcost. The researcher conducted surveys with Punjabispeaking diabetes patients, with health careproviders and practitioners, and key informantswithin the community. Conclusions and recommendationsare included. Although this study focused on a southAsian community, there are other communities -worldwide – that may recognize themselves in similarlived experiences.
